Pharyngeal constrictors Phases and mechanisms of deglutition Sources + Show all Case description History A 65-year-old male presented with a 12-month history of progressive dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) and odynophagia (painful swallowing) for solids. It is a submucosal plane, located between the mucosa and muscularis layers. The pharyngobasilar fascia lies between the levator and tensor veli palatini muscles 7. anteriorly: posterior border of medial pterygoid plate. inferiorly: superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle.superiorly: basilar part of occipital bone and petrous temporal bone. All other intrinsic laryngeal muscles are innervated by the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which is another branch of the vagus nerve, discussed below. This branch innervates an intrinsic laryngeal muscle called the cricothyroid muscle. The sinus of Morgagni is a defect in the anterior aspect of the pharyngobasilar fascia, containing the eustachian tube and levator veli palatini muscle 4,8. The external laryngeal branch travels to the inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle. The pharyngobasilar fascia provides structure to the lateral nasopharyngeal walls and helps maintain patency of the airway. The pharyngobasilar fascia is a part of the middle layer of deep cervical fascia that surrounds the pharynx, along with the buccopharyngeal fascia. It originates between the mucosal and muscular layers of the pharynx and is the primary component of the pharyngeal wall above the level of the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle. The p haryngobasilar fascia is the part of the middle layer of deep cervical fascia that attaches the pharynx to the skull base.
